I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of this book, and I absolutely fell in love with the characters! It's fun, light, witty, and romantic. The hero and heroine are likeable and I loved Livvy's strength and the way she was a champion for other women. Some of the best parts are the dialogue between North and Livvy and it was great how many times I actually laughed out loud! The behind the scenes plotting with North and his friends was so funny and here's hoping L.L. Muir writes stories about them as well. Loved the humor! Don't miss this wonderful story. Highly recommended.Tags : Blood for Ink (A Regency Romance): (Book 1) (Scarlet Plumiere) - Kindle edition by L.L. Muir. Romance Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.,ebook,L.L. Blood for Ink A Regency Romance Book 1 Scarlet Plumiere edition by LL Muir Romance eBooks Reviews
This is a fantastic book! I am excited to read the second book. I stumbled across this one from the preview chapter at the end of "Lord Fool to the Rescue ". I am normally not a big fan of those, the are usually books I've no interest in, but this one got me hooked in that one chapter. The full novel did not disappoint my expectations. It was a keeper. I intend to read it again before the next book. Muir has a great and engaging sense of humour, and the romance is wonderful (and not smutty, if you care like I do). READ THIS BOOK!
I liked this story for the most part.
We have four heroes in this story, but the main one is North. These gentlemen decide to unmask the person who has been writing stories for the paper. The writer calls her/him self by an alias but our heroes assume the writer is female. The stories give society the unsavory truth regarding some gentlemen -- so the writer has made enemies.
North says he will reveal the writer and if the person is female he will marry her. Our heroine is Livvy, and she barely escaped marriage to a horrible man. She is the writer and has saved other young women. But her enemies are waiting for the writer to be revealed so she can be killed.
North falls for Livvy and realizes her secret. The four gentlemen spend the book trying to protect her.
The story was good but the romance was lacking -- very lacking. The hero and heroine rarely talked to each other for any length. The "bro" romance seemed to take the lead. They were all such good friends and always having supposedly clever conversations - it got old after awhile. I would rather the hero and heroine were engaged in some sort of dialogue.
If the reader is into the one for all and all for one, four amigos or four Musketeers kind of story this is it. I am not a fan of those stories myself. The writing was good, though I found it difficult to follow at times.
I thought about giving this book just three stars but decided I shouldn't do that just because the story didn't appeal much to me personally.
What a refreshing new talent. I say new because the books I can find all seem to have become available in the last couple of years.
This is the second book I've read by this author and I'm thrilled to say I liked it even more. She has a great way with her scenes. The scene outside Merills club inside the carriage was gorgeously written. She set the scene, she throttled up the tension, she didn't stoop to trite over utilized phrasing, and she managed to convey the depth of emotion all in just three paragraphs or so. I had to pause and just admire the structure and how well she did with that scene. Beautiful.
Yes there are some typos. Yes there are a few challenges with pacing. Of the four kings I felt we only really got to know two well. And what a great job portraying the love and affection these guys have for each other as well as the competiveness also present.
And oh how refreshing to read a great romance with not one single sex scene. I didn't miss it and it wasn't necessary. Our author did a great job of conveying the passion in all the scenes without going to excess. Yes, people really can write an excellent love story without segues into "dear playboy". Thank you for that Mrs Muir!
I'll be buying all the rest of her books. Here's hoping the magic only improves.
Blood for Ink (The Scarlet Plumiere Series #1) is a finely written
Regency romantic-comedy-suspense-thriller with well-crafted plot,
fully drawn characters, titillating love scenes, harrowing abductions,
and wonderfully charming dialogue. The Viscount Forsgreen, a member of
the Four Kings, a group of titled gents who have been friends since
childhood, has been wrongfully accused by the anonymous, but very
popular, author of a gossip column that champions the weaker sex. The
Scarlet Plumiere has a ton of readers in the Ton, fans everywhere
(mostly female), and some particularly frightening enemies among the
male population, whose misdeeds and crimes against women she routinely
discloses in her daily column.
One of the Four Kings, the Earl of Northwick, takes it upon himself to
uncover the identity of the elusive columnist, clear his friend's
name, and take The Scarlet Plumiere off the market by marrying her to
the winner of a lottery. Enamored by the Plumiere's intelligence and
wit, is it any surprise that North finds himself the holder of the
winning lot? But if North uncovers Plumiere, so can her mortal
enemy(ies) bent on murder. And so the well-crafted plot unfolds ...
In her promo, the author states, "I feel the Blood for Ink may be my
finest work to date and would hate for it to linger long in the
shadows." It is a fine work---no argument there. However, if the author
had only let the work linger a little longer to give a loved one or
some other kind soul time to make one more pass, she might have
thereafter published the perfect book. That book would have been free
of those last few typographical errors and a niggling formatting
anomaly that appears every other chapter, or so, where the beginning
quote marks in the interior of paragraphs are formatted as straight
quotes, rather than curly quotes.
We forgive a multitude of formatting imperfections and spelling errors
in our eBooks these days, even when the writing is nowhere near
exceptional. However, with so many authors racing their works to
"print", I would love to have seen this one, exceptional
storyteller---who obviously took great time and care in crafting her
story---produce a perfect final product. 5 stars for the exceptional
storytelling. 4 stars for the formatting---so very close!
