I enjoyed this book. Bad reviewers were mad it wasn't like Practical Magic. It was compared to Witches of Eastwick, as well. I am very glad it was not like Witches of Eastwick and if I wanted something like Practical Magic....I would read Practical Magic again. I thought the story was great. I loved the characters. As much as I hate getting involved in series....I would not mind reading more about the sisters. Or maybe a back story of some of the family members lost. Like Eliza or Honor. It will be re-shelved to be read again later.Tags : The Sparrow Sisters: A Novel [Ellen Herrick] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I ordered Ellen Herrick's new novel, The Forbidden Garden, first & after reading some reviews, decided to read this novel first & am glad I did. Just gives so much back story on the main characters. I love the author's style of writing. I often read passages over again since they are so beautifully written. As an ardent gardener & herbalist, I love how Ms. Herrick weaves gardening details through her story. I completely enjoyed this story & look forward to reading her newest work.
Magical but not spooky or over the top with supernatural characters. This is what I imagine magic, realistically, would be or like maybe is. Women with extraordinary green thumbs and a knack for homeopathic cures plus an astute and special way of knowing what a person is lacking in their lives and a sixth sense in knowing what to do in order to "heal them". No hocus pocus, riding on brooms type of witchcraft but maybe what was considered witchcraft back in the 1600s. There is something definitely magical about these 3 sisters abilities and the story is very interesting and kept me entertained. Entertained enough that I've already ordered the sequel.
I loved this book. I read it from the library and liked it so much that I now have bought it for my . I just finished it last night and I'm having a hard time letting go of the characters. This book does not remind me of any of the books listed in the description. It is a much kinder book and reminds me more of garden spells by Sarah Addison Allen which I also loved. I am so glad that there is a second book coming out that I can revisit the spell this book puts you in.
The first chapters of the book were a little hard to follow or to engage; several times I was considering putting this down the character development, while very thorough, almost put me off. Once the characters began to entertwine, however, I became quickly engrossed. I think every community has "those families/individuals"--the sisters were unique and not as connected to the community, so became immediately misunderstood and sort of outcasts. Every community has business owners and community leaders that people make assumptions about. Loved that the sisters were so supportive of each other and almost selective in what community members they did let into their lives. I read this fairly quickly. Worth the read.
This is the first time I've rated a book while I'm in the midst of reading it. I love it. I'm enamored and have to keep reading. There is a flow to this story which is almost magical. And I believe if you are a reader of Sarah Addison Allen's books, then you will love this story.
I fell in love with the menagerie of characters contained in this book. This is definitely a favorite of mine now, and I will patiently wait for Sorrel's story.
This was a truly excellent book. I had a bit of trouble getting into it and keeping track of the characters involved, but at some point that all fell away an felt sucked in to the life of Granite Point. There are many wonderful things that could be said about this book, but for me it was the sisterhood. Not just of the Sparrow sisters themselves, but the joining of all the women in the community as an ultimate sisterhood. That stood behind what they one was right even if it took them too long to realize it and stand up to the men in their lives. Well done Ms. Herrick. I look forward to the next book of your's I read.
Don't trust comparisons to the writing of Alice Hoffman, they're insulting to Alice Hoffman. And don't trust comparisons to "Garden Spells" by Sarah Addison Allen, which I didn't love but which is a much better book than "The Sparrow Sisters." Ellen Herrick is just not a good writer. The characters are one-dimensional -- each is basically given a single trait -- so the book is not character-driven. And the story plods along, so it's not plot-driven. The Cape Cod town of Granite Point, which is meant to be quaint and alluring, completely lacks charm. Reading "The Sparrow Sisters" was a chore. I only finished it because I'm one of those people who has a lot of trouble pulling the bookmark. Between these pages there's no magic and no realism, just a failed attempt at magical realism that's as appealing as dead flowers.
